Dr. Rahul Goyal
Consultant Family Physician, Physician Clinical Informatics Lead at Mediclinic Middle east
Dr Rahul was trained in the UK, mainly in the North West. As part of his GP registrar post 10 years ago in the UK, he was involved in setting up patient questionnaire templates for a nursing-led walk-in Centre clinic – this is where his interest in health informatics was kindled. He worked in the UK as a partner in Practices in the North West before moving to UAE in 2014.
Dr Rahul’s current role is both exciting and busy as he interacts with clinicians not only from a colleague’s perspective but also as a bridge between the IT, the RCM team and the clinicians.
Dr Rahul feels that health informatics encompasses a broad field, including all means of electronic data input (electronic patient health records) as well as data analytics. For him health Informatics means capturing the patients’ medical journey as the patient’s narrative in an organized fashion, aiding the clinician to deliver best practice care by using EHR tools such as CPOE, clinical decision support, bedside medical device integration, unit dose dispensation, etc.
The end result of the exercise has to be good quality of care delivery, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary team access to the patient’s medical narrative.
Data analytics at the moment are the focus of health informatics, as they help not only the individual patient/clinician but also in formulating population health policies. Precision medicine and population medicine all depend on clinical informatics and data analytics to produce good results.
